Renewal FAQ

The renewal questions guards actually ask.

When should I start my renewal?
Start at least 60 days before your expiration date. That gives you time to finish the 32-hour course, get your certificate, and have BSIS process the renewal — all without any gap in your registration.
Can I keep working during my renewal?
Yes — as long as your current card hasn't expired. If it expires before BSIS issues your renewal, you'll typically need to stop working until your renewed registration is active. Always confirm with your employer.
My card expired. Can I still renew?
Less than 3 years? Most guards can still renew with continuing education. More than 3 years? You typically need to start over with new-guard training. Use our free eligibility check above before paying for the wrong course.
What's actually in the 32-hour CE course?
Eight modules covering updated California security law, use-of-force and de-escalation, observation and documentation, communication and reporting, and a final review. All mobile-friendly, all self-paced.
Do I need a new Live Scan to renew?
Usually no — your fingerprints stay on file with BSIS. But there are exceptions (lapsed too long, BSIS request, name change). We'll flag if you need a new Live Scan during your eligibility check.
